Does HR have a future? What needs to transform to keep HR relevant?

Does HR have a future? What needs to transform to keep HR relevant?

Human Resource Management is at a crossroads. For the past twenty years, HR has increasingly found a seat at the Board Table and has gained substantial financing and power. However, the return on investment (ROI) has not always been evident. In fact, many organizations are now outsourcing some of their core HR functions. Others are re-evaluating the benefit of this significant investment.

It is also true that in some cases HR is not universally respected or liked. Some people even refer to HR as the BPU – the business prevention unit. HR certainly has, at least, a serious PR problem. At worst, it has an uncertain future.

HR Transformation is about driving business results, and hence this requires HR to focus beyond the necessary administration functions to transformation efforts designed to improve HR functionality and services that will align with corporate goals and strategies like quality, productivity, internal and external customer satisfaction. HR transformation may require a significant and on-going change in every aspect of the HR function.

It is also about having the right ‘metrics.’  SHRM Metrics refers to the gathering information to assess the impact of actions and inform decision-making. It is about proper measures, measurement, and analysis. This is a critical task for HR professionals who want to contribute to organization performance and demonstrate their ROI. Of course, you must measure the right things at the right time and in the right way.

There is also a real need for transformational HR leadership. Transformational HR Leaders motivate and inspire people through their vision and high ethical and moral standards.  Research suggests that organizations led by transformational Leaders have higher levels of performance than those led by other types of Leaders (Buon, 2014).
